What is Genocide?

Genocide was first recognized as a crime under international law in 1946 by the United Nations. Genocide means any of the following acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group, as such:

  • killing members of the group

  • causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group

  • deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part

  • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group

  • forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Any nation that commits any of these acts is to be confronted and punished. Genocide can mean more than the extermination of a group of individuals.

Through the deportation and forced placement of Latinx individuals in Concentration Camps, the United States is committing genocide against Latinx minorities as they are causing serious bodily and mental harm to these individuals, imposing measures intended to prevent births within this group, are forcibly removing children from their families in placing them in separate facilities, and are deliberately inflicting on this group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction.
